‘The Gig in a Box’
After first meeting and working with the great tenor Jose Carreras whilst working at the RPO in 1989, I gradually became more involved with organising and curating the orchestral arrangements for his growing arena concert event schedule with IMG.
Before long, I was responsible for not only supplying all of Jose’s worldwide concert event music, but also supplying the repertoire for the guest artists and orchestral items for his concerts as well. This ‘gig in a box’ model I came to develop was an innovation for classical artists in the 1990s and was the kick start for me to do the same for others. Since that time, this has become a specialism and a busy area of activity for our team, in many cases also writing new arrangements and adapting existing material as required for any event.
On a personal note, it has been one of the great privileges of my career to have worked so closely for so long with an artist of the stature of Jose Carreras. His talent, hard work, attention to detail, kindness, loyalty and gracious humility have been an inspiring object lesson in professionalism for me and so many. No matter how successful he became, he has never lost sight of the fact that in the big machinery of an international performing career, the smallest cogs and components play their integral part in that success. I am very proud to have been one of those components since 1989.
